Delta Works

The Netherlands, known for its tulips, windmills, clogs and cheese. But not only that. The country is also internationally recognized for its effective flood defenses to protect the country from high water from the North Sea.

This defense system includes polders, dikes and the Delta Works. It includes 6 dams, 2 locks and 5 storm surge barriers. All are of great importance, since the Netherlands lies largely below sea level.

Water from major rivers flows to the sea. Ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising due to climate change. Other consequences for the world are extreme weather conditions such as heat and drought, as well as higher chances of flooding.

These extreme weather conditions, including floods, also negatively affect buildings/homes.
